  Welcome:

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Welcome to Russell County Middle School. We are looking forward to a very exciting and rewarding school year.

Your child may already have filled you in on some of the details of life at Russell County Middle School—whether the other kids are friendly, what the teachers are like here, the quality of the lunches served, and whether RCMS is easier or harder than the school he/she last attended. We like to think that after the first ten days all students feel like veterans.

We are pleased to have you as partners in this educational year. As the year progresses, and as you become either more informed or more puzzled, we encourage you to call the school and talk with those who might be of help. If your question deals with in-class events, please ask to speak with the teacher. If it deals with the overall program, curriculum, or activities please contact me directly.

One of our goals is to see that the parents and guardians of students—like the students themselves—feel at home at Russell County Middle School. You will want to look at your child’s copy of the Russell County Middle School Student Handbook and the Russell County Schools’ Student Academic Plan and Statement of Responsibilities Calendar. It does a good job of explaining a typical year at our school. By reading it, you will have a better idea of what to expect.

1.       T.E.A.M.S.  Together Everyone Achieves More Success.  This year at RCMS your child has been randomly placed on a team.  The team is comprised of four common teachers.  This is an effort by RCMS to have smaller learning communities within the school.

2.       Russell County Middle School will be on a six period day. Due to these changes, promotion requirements have changed.  Students must pass all core classes in order to be promoted to the next grade.

3.       TRANSPORTATION: Transportation to and from your child’s school is a privilege.  Misbehavior on the bus is prohibited and may result in removal from the bus.

However, if there are any problems on the bus to or from school, please let us know so     that action can be taken as soon as possible.  Car riders will be dismissed at the same time as bus riders.

4.       ABSENTEEISM: Excuses for absences are required by law and must accompany the child when he or she returns to school. State-approved excuses are illness, religious holiday, and family emergency. If your child’s absence is for another reason, please explain.

The excuse should state the reason for the absence and date or dates of the absence. To be approved, the note should be sent when the child first returns to school.

With your help, our teachers and staff will do their best to make this new school year meaningful and fulfilling for your child.

We are glad to have you with us this year, and we want to assure you that we will do our best to help your child experience academic, social, and emotional growth. With your help and cooperation, this should be an excellent school year.

Sincerely,

Mesha Ramsey, Ed.D

Principal
