Russell County is situated on the Alabama / Georgia border amid rolling
plains and woodlands. This progressive, growing county offers the serene
atmosphere and friendly folks of a rural area but also includes thriving Phenix City. The amenities of a larger city are available in Columbus,
Georgia which is across the Chattahoochee River.
Booming agricultural, timber, and paper industries are cornerstones of
Russell County’s rapidly expanding industrial base. The local chamber of
commerce actively recruits industry to the area. Fort Benning, a major
U.S. Army training post, is adjacent to Columbus.
Higher education and major college sports are available a few miles away
at Auburn University. The area is also served by Chattahoochee Valley
Community College, Troy State University at Phenix City, and Columbus
State University.
v
Russell County Schools
The
Russell County School District is a rural, progressive school district
characterized by great positive change since 1994. Concern for
youngsters is paramount in our district serving 3,740 students. Academic
achievement is a priority as is the commitment to educate all the
students of Russell County. Students have shown academic gains each
year, and school year 2004 test scores are at a historic high.
Academic achievement and meeting the individualized needs of students is
central to the mission of the school district. All schools within the
Russell County School District are accredited by the Southern
Association of Colleges and Schools and six of the seven schools are
Alabama Reading Initiative Literacy Demonstration Sites. The Russell
County School District also is a recent recipient of funding from the
Alabama Reading First Initiative targeted to improve reading performance
in Kindergarten through third grade. According to a functional
illiteracy assessment in 2000, over 30% of Russell County’s population
was determined to be functionally illiterate. This places a priority on
the district to emphasize proficiency in the areas of reading and
writing.
Pride best describes how Russell County residents view their schools.
That pride is visible in the system’s commitment to making a broad
spectrum of educational opportunities available for Russell County
students of all ages. Russell County High School offers a full range of
advanced courses as well as an outstanding JROTC program and a large
menu of career-technical offerings including a recognized
state-of-the-art culinary arts program.
The
Russell County School District, despite socioeconomic barriers,
continues to improve academically. The strength lies within the positive
and progressive attitudes of the administration, faculty and staff
within the district and their determination to make a difference in the
lives of children.
